Daughters of The Holy Spirit Lay Associates – Bedford Group

“There is no mission without adoration, without calling on the Spirit to renew the face of the earth.”

Each day we draw the strength to love from the love of the Trinity, and we pray in a special way to the Holy Spirit. We also like to pray to the Virgin Mary and celebrate in a special way the Feast of Pentecost and the Feast of The Immaculate Conception.

The origins of the DHS congregation began very simply in Brittany, France on December 8th, 1706. Two women from modest families, Marie Balavenne and Rennée Burel, encouraged by their diocesan priest, Jean Leuduger, committed themselves to live together to serve God by serving the poor, the sick and the children. In 1902 the Congregation opened beyond Brittany: England, Belgium, Holland, England, the United States and Canada. The Sisters arrived in Bedford in 1904. Sister Mae and Sister Margaret are very active in our parish community today.

The DHS Lay Associates

The DHS Lay Associates, are an international group of men and woman who share the spirituality of the Daughters of the Holy Spirit in our daily lives. There are 11 groups in the English and Irish province with 3 in this area: Bedford, Olney and Northampton.

The Bedford group meets on the first Wednesday of the month at the Sisters house in Bradgate Road.  Reflecting on the way the Holy Spirit is working in our lives – with our families, parish work and wider roles in the community – we come together in prayer and dialogue with the Sisters.  During the year, we have spiritual retreats and days of reflection. The DHS web site (http://www.fillesstesprit.org/site/english) illuminates the local, national and international work of the Sisters. We share their interest and work in peace, justice and solidarity with the poor. Many of us were mothers with young children when we first began our journey with the DHS family. However, the Associates welcome both men and women from 17 upwards. Spiritual formation takes place throughout the year and the first annual commitment is celebrated when the candidate feels ready to share the charism of the DHS in their own lives.  The group provides a powerful support network through prayer and action.
